Short answer: a sponge-pad cigar humidor bag keeps a sealed pack in the 65–75% RH band for up to 90 days. Choose 65% RH for firm, full-bodied cigars and hot climates, 69% RH as the retail default, and 72% RH for dry climates and fast turnover. Our standard sizes carry 5 (135×250 mm), 10 (220×225 mm), 15 (350×300 mm) and 20 cigars (300×370 mm), with an OPP/PE film and an open-cell sponge pad inside.

A sealed bag is the only humidifier many cigars will ever see. Between the factory and the point of sale — and often until the last cigar is smoked — the pack is the humidor. This guide is written from the factory floor: what each humidity level does, what a sponge pad can and cannot do, and which of the four sizes fits which job.

What does each RH level actually do to a cigar?

Relative humidity decides how much water the wrapper, binder and filler hold, and that shows up in three places: the draw, the burn line and the aroma. The differences are physical, not stylistic.

The three working levels and where each one belongs
Level Draw & burn Flavour read Best for Main risk
65% RH Firmer draw, cool and even burn Sharper, more concentrated — less water vapour in the smoke Strong, full-bodied blends; long ageing; hot and humid shipping lanes Wrapper can crack if the pack then sits in dry air
69% RH Soft but not loose; reliable burn Balanced — the profile the blender intended General retail, duty-free, samplers and gift packs None worth naming — this is the default
72% RH Looser draw, slower burn Rounder, slightly muted by vapour Dry climates, winter air, cigars smoked within weeks Above ~74% RH: mould and plugged draws arrive quickly

Three levels, three micro-climates. The retail default sits at 69% RH; both extremes trade one benefit for another.

One practical note that rarely gets written down: the level inside the bag follows the room the bag lives in. A pack held at 69% RH in a European winter warehouse and the same pack in a Gulf summer showroom do not behave identically — every 10 °C of storage temperature rise shortens the working life of a passive pad noticeably. That is why our guidance is always level plus climate, never a bare number.

How does a sponge-pad humidor bag hold humidity?

Our humidor bags are a two-layer laminate — OPP/PE, 0.09 mm as standard — with an open-cell sponge pad sealed inside. The film does two jobs: the printed OPP layer carries the brand artwork in up to 9 colours and keeps its shape in a display box, while the PE sealant layer forms the zip track and controls how fast water vapour escapes. The pad does the third job: it holds a measured dose of water and releases vapour slowly into the headspace.

The physics matters, because it sets expectations. A sponge pad is passive and one-directional: it gives moisture up, but it does not pull excess back. Fill a bag with an already-wet cigar and the pad will not dry it down; the pack simply holds what it has. That is also why the injected water dose matters more than the pad size — we specify the dose per size, and the pad is dosed so the sealed pack lands in the 65–75% RH band and stays there for up to 90 days.

Buyers comparing technologies should read it this way: a two-way salt sachet holds a tighter setpoint but costs more per pack and adds a loose component inside the bag; a sponge pad is laminated into the pack, costs a few cents, and holds a band instead of a point. For retail packs with a 6–12 month cycle, the band is what the shelf life actually needs.

A short look at the finished product before we get to the four sizes:

Our sponge-pad cigar humidor bags. If the clip does not load in your region, the specification tables below cover the same ground.

Which RH should you specify for your market?

We dose the pad to the level you order. As a rule of thumb:

  • 65% RH — if your market is hot and humid (Gulf, Caribbean, Southeast Asia) or the blend is full-bodied. Cigars arrive firm and burn clean.
  • 69% RH — the default for most retail and duty-free programmes. If you are unsure, order this.
  • 72% RH — for dry climates (desert interiors, heated winter retail) and packs that will be opened within weeks, not months.

What we will not do is print “69% RH” on a pack and dose it loosely. The printed claim and the pad dose have to match, because a customer with a hygrometer will check. If your brand needs a tighter setpoint than a sponge pad can hold, say so at quotation — we would rather scope the right technology than ship a pack that overpromises.

What sizes does the sponge-pad humidor bag come in?

Four stock sizes cover the usual retail ladder, all cut from the same OPP/PE film with the pad inside:

Four cigar humidor bag sizes drawn to scale: 5-count 135x250mm, 10-count 220x225mm, 15-count 350x300mm and 20-count 300x370mm
Standard sizes drawn to scale. Counts assume ring gauge 50–54; larger gauges move up one size.

Size Outer dims Typical use Layout
5 cigars 135 × 250 mm Retail shelf, sampler packs Single row
10 cigars 220 × 225 mm Gift box insert, two-tier display Two rows of 5
15 cigars 350 × 300 mm Counter display, cabinet packaging Three rows of 5
20 cigars 300 × 370 mm Bulk retail, duty-free Four rows of 5

As a reference from a recent order: the 5-count bag in this range quotes around USD 0.20/pc at 10,000 pcs, MOQ 10,000 pcs, colour cylinder USD 78 per colour (one-off, reusable on re-orders), lead time 21 days after payment, on EXW / CIF / DDP terms. Custom dimensions are die-cut from the same film, so a non-standard size does not change the MOQ — it changes the cutting die only.

If you are planning a sampler programme, the 5-count fresh pack sampler and the 60-count humidified bag are the two ends we ship most; the four sizes above sit in between. The structure and dosing logic are identical across the range — see our cigar bag material guide for why humidor bags run OPP/PE or MOPP/PE while plain zipper bags run MOPP/VMPET/PE.

How should the pad be prepared before the bag is sealed?

For brands that fill their own packs, the pad ships dry and is activated at packing time — that keeps the working window long. The routine is simple:

  1. Dose to the printed level. Wet the pad evenly — distilled water only — until it is uniformly damp with no free water pooling when tilted. The dose per size is on the specification card we ship with samples.
  2. Never use tap water straight onto the pad. Chlorine and minerals leave residue and odour inside a sealed pack; distilled water costs almost nothing more.
  3. Fill and seal promptly. Once activated, the pad starts exchanging with the room air. Load the cigars, purge gently, and close the zip track fully along its length.
  4. Store sealed packs away from heat. The film slows vapour loss, it does not stop it. A sealed pack in direct sun or above a heat source will spend its pad early.

Re-openable is part of the design: after the customer takes one cigar and re-zips the pack, the pad keeps working for the remaining cigars until its dose is spent — which is exactly the behaviour a shop needs across a 90-day shelf cycle.

Sponge-pad humidor bag or plain zipper bag — which one is yours?

The two products we build answer different briefs, and choosing wrong is the most expensive mistake in this category:

  • Cigar humidor bag (OPP/PE or MOPP/PE + sponge pad) — when cigars must stay at smoking condition for weeks to months outside a humidor: samplers, subscription boxes, retail without walk-in humidors, travel retail.
  • Custom zipper cigar bag (MOPP/VMPET/PE, no pad) — when the pack is brand presentation: a premium matte white front with a transparent back, resealable, for cigars that live in a proper humidor at the shop. For that route, see our walkthrough of cigar brand custom bags with a matt white front and transparent back.

Both start from the same artwork and the same cylinder tooling logic. If your range needs both — a humidified pack for the sampler and a matte display bag for the cabinet — we build them as one programme so the shelf reads as one brand.

What should you confirm before ordering?

Five items get you a complete quote in 24 hours:

1. Size — one of the four stock sizes or your own dimensions
2. Cigar count and ring gauge — so the layout is right the first time
3. Target RH — 65, 69 or 72; this sets the pad dose
4. Artwork and colour count — cylinders are USD 78 per colour, one-off
5. Destination — for the shipping term (EXW / CIF / DDP)

How long does a sponge-pad cigar humidor bag stay at 65–75% RH?

Up to 90 days from activation when the pack stays sealed and stored away from heat, in our standard OPP/PE structure with the dosed pad. Opening and re-zipping the bag consumes the pad faster, since each opening exchanges the headspace with room air; for a pack opened weekly, expect roughly 2 to 3 months of service from the dose.

Can I choose 69% RH exactly, or only the 65–75% band?

A sponge pad holds a band, not a fixed point — that is the physics of a passive, one-directional reservoir. We dose the pad so the sealed pack settles inside 65–75% RH, weighted toward the level you order: dosed for 69%, the pack sits in the high 60s to low 70s for most of its life. If your claim on the pack must be a single number held precisely, that calls for a two-way sachet, and we will say so at quotation rather than print something the pad cannot hold.

What is the MOQ for custom printed humidor bags?

10,000 pieces per design, the same as our plain zipper bags. Gravure printing needs one cylinder per colour at USD 78 each — a one-off cost that is reusable on every re-order. Below MOQ, the honest options are a smaller size from an existing cylinder or a stocked design; we would rather offer those than quote a volume the press cannot run economically.

Do the bags need water added before packing, or are they ready to use?

We ship both ways. The standard programme ships the pad pre-dosed and the bag ready to fill — pack straight from the carton. For brands that fill overseas and clear customs with dry goods, we ship pads dry with a dosing card, and your packing team activates them with distilled water at the bench. Tell us at order stage which workflow your line uses.

Will the pad wet the cigars or stain the wrapper?

No, when the pack is used as designed. The pad sits below the cigars in its own pocket and releases vapour, not liquid — the dose is calibrated so no free water forms on the film. The failure mode to avoid is over-dosing a pad by hand: a dripping pad pressed against a wrapper will mark it. That is why the dosing card ships with the samples, and why we dose factory-activated pads by weight, not by eye.
